چکیده

background: essential oils and their major constituents are useful sources of antimicrobial compounds. there are a few reports on the decontamination and antimicrobial activity of essential oils towards shigella spp. m aterials and methods: in this study, the antimicrobial and decontamination potentials of essential oils at different concentrations, belonging to plants such as thymus vulgaris, saturiea hortensis, mentha polegium, cuminum cyminum, lavandula officinalis and mentha viridis l. (spearmint), towards shigella sonnei and shigella  flexneri were investigated. the disk diffusion method demonstrated the antimicrobial potential of the essential oils. r es ults: the ability of essential oils to decontaminate vegetables such as, tomato, red cabbage, carrot, fresh parsley and fresh green onion that were previously inoculated with shigella spp. was determined. inhibitory effects of essential oils towards shigella spp. were noted in the disk diffusion method. there was a reduction in shigella population following inoculation of cultures with 0.5% and 0.1% (v/v) essential oils. conclusion: this study confirmed that essential oils have the potential to be used for decontamination of vegetables.

The indirect haemagglutination test in dysentery caused by Shigella sonnei and Shigella flexneri.

The examination of cultures of stools is mostly used in establishing the diagnosis of bacillary dysentery. Agglutination, the most frequently used serological investigation, does not give reliable results and is therefore not generally used. The bacteriological examination of stools fails in a certain percentage of cases, irrespective of the mode of culture used. Particularly troublesome are ex...

Antimicrobial effect of spices and herbs on Shigella sonnei and Shigella flexneri.

Of 17 spices and herbs tested at 1% (wt/vol) in Mueller-Hinton (MH) agar, only cloves, thyme, oregano, allspice, basil, rosemary, and marjoram showed antimicrobial effects on Shigella. The MICs of thyme, oregano, basil, and rosemary (as determined by the agar dilution method) ranged from 0.5 to 1% (wt/vol) depending on the Shigella strain used. With the use of various combinations of temperatur...

Antimicrobial resistance in Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei in Hong Kong, 1986 to 1995.

Three hundred and thirty-three Shigella isolates obtained in 1986 to 1995 were tested for their susceptibilities to 19 antimicrobial agents. Nalidixic acid resistance had emerged in 59.6% of Shigella flexneri isolates during 1994 to 1995, with all tested resistant isolates having the mutation in gyrA encoding the Ser-83 alteration. Multiresistance (resistance to four or more agents) was more co...

Clinical implications of reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones in paediatric Shigella sonnei and Shigella flexneri infections

OBJECTIVES We aimed to quantify the impact of fluoroquinolone resistance on the clinical outcome of paediatric shigellosis patients treated with fluoroquinolones in southern Vietnam. Such information is important to inform therapeutic management for infections caused by this increasingly drug-resistant pathogen, responsible for high morbidity and mortality in young children globally. METHODS ...

Incorporating Time–Dose–Response Into Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei Outbreak Models

Shigellosis, or bacillary dysentery, is an acute enteric infection spread directly or indirectly through the fecal–oral route by the genus Shigella (Scallan et al. 2011, Heymann 2008). Shigella is a genus of gram-negative, nonmotile bacilli belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae (WHO 2005, Jin et al. 2002), which includes four species, of which S. flexneri (serogroup B) and S. sonnei (serog...
